Hill O'Keefe is a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, older now, and with war wounds that have left him a paraplegic. His only pleasures; despite his post-war financial successes; are alcohol, tobacco, and the company of prostitutes. He is biding his time, waiting only for death, when his existence is suddenly and unexpectedly transformed. One lonely night a tremendous explosion high above his secluded estate leaves him comatose and gravely injured. He awakens to find himself healed, rejuvenated, and in the care of a mysterious band of alien, yet human, outworlders. In time, he also learns that he has landed in the midst of a galactic war, a war in which he may hold the key to victory or defeat. Yet despite his importance to both belligerents, one side views him as nothing more than a criminal who should never walk free, while the other would be more than happy to see him enslaved if not killed. No matter which way he turns, it is going to be a long, hard road for Hill O'Keefe.

I generally don't write reviews, but I saw this good book without a single review and resigned myself to write one that I know won't do it justice.The pros: If you commonly read self-published books (as I do), you are aware that many are in need of editing (or even spell-check)--this book is not one of them. The writing, formatting, etc. is all of high quality. The overall setting is fairly unique, at least in my experience, and I was presented with several surprises as I read along. I liked the main character, but more importantly, all of the character personalities seemed believable (human, you might say). I like long stories and this book is quite a bit longer than most of the ones I see new authors releasing. When I finished reading the final page I wanted more and I hope to see a sequel!
The cons: The first half or so of the sample is drawn out and boring. If you're an impatient reader you might get lost there. The descriptions of the ship(s) were a little bland and didn't allow me to imagine how they looked or functioned with any degree of what I would call accuracy. In the last third of the novel some things happened that I don't feel the reader was adequately prepared for and some readers might take issue with that.
Summary: This is a good novel. If you like science fiction books and aren't a stickler for "hard science," do yourself a favor and give it a chance. Read the sample (in its entirety!) and, if you're at all interested, pay the absurdly low price for a quality story.

Tons of other people have described the story line so I'll spare the effort on that. My title says it all. This book hooked me within 10 minutes and I could barely put it down to go to work. I made time to read in the evenings until I was too groggy to read every night until I finished it.
The author spends the time developing the characters in a way that makes them people you either love or hate or find intriguing and does so in a way that is invariably interesting. He pulls no punches on realism either. He doesn't tiptoe around topics to be pc and he doesn't hold back thoughts that people wouldn't say out loud at dinner. Don't get me wrong - there's nothing offensive in here unless you are wound way too tight - but the book is deeply honest and open, gritty, emotional, and very occasionally just humorous enough to notice. It's like being inside the main characters head and getting to share his every thought as he goes through this horrendous ordeal that starts with what is basically an alien abduction because they've injured him all the way to a stunning, brutal, and dramatic ending that I'm not going to ruin but if it were a football game, you'd be standing up and screaming for the home team.
I hesitate to lose credibility through overstatement, but I swear there were times when I thought I was going to break into a freaking sweat while I was reading this book. I've read all books by Heinlein, Piers Anthony, Andre Norton, half of Orson Scott Card's, Arthur C. Clark, Larry Niven, Frank Herbert, and so on. I've also read several very good series written by more contemporary and some budding authors. I found this novel to be as good as anything I've ever read. It reminds me a bit of Forever War by Haldeman in some ways, but that book was so short it was over as soon as I was really digging it. The plot is very different but it's also vaguely reminiscent in some ways of Old Man's War by John Scalzi (another excellent book and author).
I am eagerly awaiting the author's next book.
Dear Mr. McCartney, As of today, you have 137 reviews and almost all are 4 and 5 stars, including my 5! I am hoping your next installment will be on soon. The only handicap is what appears to be a concerted effort to insert words from the NY Times crossword puzzles. I echo others who really like the story, but get hung up with the numerous "big" words. I have a masters in geology, am 62, read a lot, especially scifi. and I have a respectable vocabulary, but the words wouldn't even be found in the GRE exam I took back in 1972! After the first few, I would hit one of your words and just start laughing out loud. We are reading about an ex marine here! I want you to continue writing and become successful. You provided a good balance of character development and action, and the action was terrific. You also made the story more adult by inserting a little romance in just the right measure (but be careful, Stuart Woods tried to go into too much "depth" with a Stone Barrington romance scene, and Woods fell flat on his figurative face). Some things are best left to the readers imagination! I think that most of us are looking for great escapist fun with the unlimited exotic possibilities that scifi offers, along with cliffhanger excitement for characters we can relate with. I don't agree with the one reviewer that said the first part of the novel was too boring. After all, I'm sure we all wish we could be there! If you can continue with the great storyline you began in Volume 1, you will be a hit. All of us will be telling our friends that they have to read your novels and cheering you on!
An injured vietnam vet is whisked into space after witnessing 'alien' activity, he is derided as a violent barbarian by a peace loving civilisation that has forgotten the meaning of war, a civilisation which is under threat.... the book ends leaving one really wanting to read more...
in terms of where this fits on the Science Fiction scale, it is not hard Science Fiction rather it's more of an adventure in space and if categorised would probably be considered soft Military SciFi. The story is a great yarn and i couldn't stop reading it. its well worth the read.
The book was well presented and edited which makes a nice change from a lot of the other $0.99 ebooks out there
If you're a science fiction fan, then this is a dollar very well spent, i would have happily payed more!

As a warning The first couple of chapters are a little slow, but they help with context and creating the setting, once passed the tempo picks up and the story unfolds at a good pace.
