Synopsis
Robert, a five-year-old with epilepsy, has a seizure at school. The students don’t understand what a seizure is all about, and one child even makes fun of Robert.
To make Robert and the other students understand what happened, the Coach gives the children a lesson in music, describing it as an Orchestra in Our Brain. He illustrates just how the brain works by using musical metaphors.
Robert’s brain decided to play the wrong note, so he had a seizure. The orchestra in his brain was slightly off key.
This book’s simple and non-graphic way to explain epilepsy to children is one that will allow kids to understand seizures, and to learn about people who are different than themselves.

Orchestra in Our Brain The Story of a Child with Epilepsy eBook Cynthia Fabian Reviews
I found this book to be very good and I found out more about elipesy after reading it. It was very easy to read and I would tell other kids to read it also.
I had purchased this book, hoping to find a book that would explain epilepsy to younger children. The analogy used is of an orchestra that has one particular instrument that plays out of tune. It is a strange analogy, since it doesn't get at the spreading nature of neurons firing synchronously. Maybe if one musician started playing a different rhythmic tune, and then the person next to him/her starting playing the same different rhythmic tune, and then it spread through the orchestra, so much so that the orchestra wasn't functioning properly any more, then it might be more apt. As it is, it doesn't make sense.
Nevertheless, the depiction of the seizure in the book is glossed over and sanitized. The characters are not defined -- they are all generic and bland, with no personalities. The kindly coach, the mean kid (who tries to redeem himself in the end), the caring girl... they are all there.
The illustrations are interesting and professional, but seemed out-of-touch with the message of the book. The kids depicted look too slick and straight out of an avant-garde advertisement.
Its too bad; according to the back cover of the book, the author is a former teacher with epilepsy who obviously had good intentions when writing this book. Good intentions do not make a good book, however.
If you're looking for a book to explain epilepsy to kids, this isn't it.
I just finished reading this high interest story about a young boy who had a seizure in school around his classmates. After certain students act negatively towards the seizure victim, the coach decides to teach a lesson on epilepsy through a music lesson.
"Orchestra In Our Brain" is quick and easy reading. The book is enjoyable and has lively and colorful illustrations. "Orchestra In Our Brain" is highly recommended as a tool to help young children understand and accept differences in people.
This is one of the best books I have ever read on epilepsy for elementary and middle school kids. It is clear and beautifully told.
